How wax works
Wax — natural carnauba or a synthetic blend — lays a soft, sacrificial film over the paint. It delivers a warm gloss, beads water, and shrugs off contaminants, but it wears off in weeks to a few months depending on conditions. It is inexpensive, quick to apply, and easy to top up, which makes it a good fit for owners who enjoy maintaining the finish themselves.
How ceramic coating works
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer (usually SiO2-based) that chemically bonds to the clear coat and cures into a hard, semi-permanent layer. It lasts years rather than months, is strongly hydrophobic, resists UV fading and chemical staining, and makes routine washing dramatically easier because far less grime bonds to the surface.
The trade-off is preparation. A coating locks in whatever is underneath, so the paint must be decontaminated and — ideally — corrected first. That prep is most of the cost and time, which is why a proper coating is a bigger investment than a wax.
Which should you choose?
- Choose wax if you want a low-cost, short-term shine and don't mind reapplying, or you're prepping for a sale and just need the finish to pop now.
- Choose a ceramic coating if you want multi-year protection, easier upkeep, and the best defence against UV and contamination — and you're willing to invest in the prep that makes it last.
- For a daily-driven vehicle, the easier maintenance of a coating usually pays for itself over its lifespan.
- Don't apply wax over a coating. It sits on top as a soft film that dulls the coating's slickness and gains you nothing the coating wasn't already doing better.
The first week: let it cure
A ceramic coating flashes off in minutes but keeps cross-linking and hardening for days afterward. During that window it is chemically vulnerable in a way it never will be again.
For the first seven days: no washing, no rain if you can help it, no automatic car wash, and nothing parked under a tree or near sprinklers. Water spots that land on a curing coating can etch into it permanently, and no amount of later washing removes them — they have to be polished out, which means taking the coating off.
If the vehicle does get wet in that first week, dry it immediately with a clean microfiber towel rather than letting it air dry. Standing water is the problem, not water itself.
How to wash a ceramic coated car
This is the whole game. A coating doesn't wear out from age — it gets buried under bonded contamination and stripped by aggressive chemistry, and both come from how it's washed.
- Use a pH-neutral car shampoo. Not dish soap, not a wheel cleaner doubling as a body wash, and not the high-alkaline snow foams sold for stripping wax. Alkaline chemistry is what degrades a coating fastest.
- Two buckets, one with a grit guard, and a clean microfiber wash mitt. The coating resists chemical attack far better than it resists being scratched.
- Wash top to bottom, rinse the mitt between panels, and do the lower rear quarter last — that's where road film concentrates.
- Dry with a clean plush microfiber drying towel or filtered forced air. Never let a coated car air dry; the minerals left behind by evaporating water are exactly what causes water spotting.
- Every two to three weeks is the right rhythm for a daily driver. Coatings make washing easier, not optional.
What actually strips a ceramic coating
- Automatic touchless washes. The strong alkaline pre-soak and acidic neutralizer they rely on is the single fastest way to kill a coating's hydrophobic performance — and it's the wash most coated-car owners default to, believing 'touchless' means 'safe'.
- Soft-cloth tunnel washes. They won't strip it chemically, but they will scratch through it. Marring in a coating cannot be polished out without removing the coating.
- Degreasers, all-purpose cleaners, and bug-and-tar removers used at full strength on coated paint.
- Traffic film and road brine left sitting for months. Bonded contamination sits on top of the coating and masks it — the coating is still there, it just can't do anything.
- Automatic wash 'wax' or 'sealant' add-ons. They deposit a film over the coating that dulls the water behaviour and does nothing useful.
Why your ceramic coating stopped beading
This is the most common question we get from coated-car owners, and nine times out of ten the coating hasn't failed — it's buried.
Hydrophobic behaviour is a surface property. Put a layer of road film, iron fallout, or hard-water minerals on top of a working coating and the water no longer touches the coating at all, so it stops beading. Owners read that as the coating wearing out and stop maintaining it, which is what actually finishes it off.
The fix is a decontamination wash: a pH-neutral wash, an iron remover to dissolve embedded fallout, and a light clay treatment where needed. In most cases the beading comes straight back, because the coating was working the whole time. Book one annually — spring is the natural time in Alberta, after the brine season.
Toppers: what they do and whether you need one
A ceramic topper — an SiO2 spray sealant applied after drying — is a sacrificial layer on top of the coating. It boosts water behaviour, adds slickness, and takes the environmental hit so the base coating doesn't.
It is not a substitute for the coating and it doesn't extend the coating's chemical life directly. What it does is keep the surface performing between decontamination washes, which is worth something on a vehicle parked outside year-round.
Apply it every few months, on a clean dry surface, and don't stack it over a dirty car — you'll seal contamination underneath it.
Maintaining a coating through an Alberta winter
Winter is when coatings earn their money and when most of them get neglected. Magnesium chloride brine is aggressive, it clings, and it keeps working on the vehicle long after the road looks dry — and a coating's hydrophobic surface means far less of it bonds in the first place, which is precisely why the vehicle needs washing to get it off rather than being left alone.
Wash every two to three weeks through the season, and prioritise the underbody, wheel wells, rocker panels, and door sills where brine collects and where the coating usually doesn't reach.
Wash indoors. A coated car washed outside at -20°C ends up with water freezing in the panel gaps and door seals, and the drying step — the one that prevents water spotting — becomes impossible.
Skip the touchless wash even when it's the convenient option. Two months of weekly touchless washing through a bad winter will do more damage to a coating than two years of correct washing.
The maintenance schedule, in short
- First 7 days: no washing, no rain, no automatic wash. Dry immediately if it gets wet.
- Every 2–3 weeks: pH-neutral two-bucket hand wash, dried with clean microfiber. Year round.
- Every 3–4 months: optional SiO2 topper on a clean, dry surface.
- Once a year, ideally spring: full decontamination wash — iron remover and clay — to restore beading and clear the brine season.
- Never: touchless washes, tunnel washes, dish soap, degreasers on paint, or wax over the top.
When it does need redoing
Even maintained properly, a coating is consumable. The signs it's genuinely at the end — as opposed to just dirty — are water that sheets rather than beads immediately after a decontamination wash, a surface that feels rough rather than slick when clean, and visible dulling that a wash doesn't lift.
Reapplication means a full prep cycle again: decontamination, machine polishing to remove whatever marring accumulated, panel wipe, and a fresh coating. That's why maintenance matters so much — the washing routine is what decides whether you're doing that at year three or year six.
Common questions
How long does a ceramic coating last?
The durability rating is a ceiling, not a guarantee. A five-year coating washed correctly — pH-neutral hand washes, no automatic washes, an annual decontamination — will generally reach it. The same coating run through touchless washes and left dirty through winter can be finished in under two years. Wax, by comparison, lasts weeks to a few months.
How do you maintain a ceramic coating?
