Aircraft Interiors: Leather, Veneer, and Cleaning Around Avionics

A cabin looks like a very nice car interior and behaves like nothing of the sort. The materials are certified, the surfaces around them are expensive and sensitive, and the failure modes for getting it wrong run from a ruined veneer panel to an avionics fault. Method matters more than product.

The materials are not automotive materials

Cabin soft furnishings are certified to burn-resistance standards, and that certification lives in treatments applied to the material. Aggressive cleaning chemistry can strip or degrade those treatments, which turns a cleaning job into an airworthiness question — and any replacement material has to meet the same standard, which is a substantial part of why cabin refurbishment costs what it does.

Aircraft leather is typically thinner and more lightly finished than automotive leather, because weight matters and the design brief is different. It responds well to gentle pH-balanced cleaning and proper conditioning, and badly to the heavy silicone dressings that leave car seats shiny.

Wood veneer is the item most easily and most expensively ruined. It is a very thin layer of real wood under a hand-applied lacquer, and that lacquer is what you are cleaning — never the wood. Solvents, alcohol, and ammonia cloud or craze it, abrasives cut through it, and standing moisture at a seam lifts it. Replacement is cabinetry work with a lead time.

Working around avionics and switchgear

  • Never spray anything directly at a panel, screen, switch, or breaker. Product goes onto the cloth, and the cloth goes to the surface — liquid running behind a bezel is how faults get created.
  • Display screens carry anti-glare coatings that ammonia-based cleaners damage permanently. Plain water or a manufacturer-approved screen cleaner on a clean microfiber is the whole method.
  • Compressed air blown into instrument stacks drives dust deeper and can carry moisture from the line. Vacuum with a soft brush rather than blowing.
  • Placards and markings are printed or applied, not moulded. Solvents lift them, and a missing placard is a maintenance item.
  • Seat rails, tracks, and belt mechanisms are structure. Clean them, but leave lubrication and adjustment to maintenance.

Moisture is the real constraint

In a car, over-wetting an interior means a musty smell. In an aircraft, water that reaches the floor structure has somewhere far worse to go — under floor panels, into the belly, and against control cables, wiring runs, and structure that is difficult to inspect and expensive to correct.

That is why cabin carpets and upholstery are cleaned with low-moisture methods and immediate extraction rather than saturation, and why proper drying time is scheduled rather than hoped for. A cabin that is still damp when the door closes is a corrosion and odour problem developing quietly.

It's also why dry steam is so useful in an aircraft: high temperature, very little water, and it reaches seat seams, track channels, vents, and galley surfaces that no cloth gets into.

Galleys, lavatories, and odour

Galleys and lavatories are where cabin odour usually originates, and both need sanitising rather than merely wiping. Spills that reach the floor pan under a galley are a common source of a smell nobody can locate.

As with vehicles, odour lives in porous material — upholstery foam, carpet backing, and headliner — so it is removed by treating those materials, not by masking the air. And as with vehicles, an odour that returns after a thorough clean usually means an ongoing source: a lavatory servicing issue, a galley drain, or water ingress that needs finding rather than cleaning.

When it's worth doing

Routine interior cleaning keeps a cabin presentable for passengers and slows the wear that makes refurbishment necessary — grit ground into carpet and seat tracks is abrasive, and cleaning it out is cheaper than replacing what it wears.

A full deep clean earns its cost before a sale, a pre-purchase inspection, a charter season, or any occasion where the cabin is the product. A well-kept interior signals a well-kept aircraft to a buyer in the same way a clean belly does to an engineer.
